Building a Sustainable Future for Kelly Lake
Introduction
Nikihk is committed to strengthening the foundation of the Kelly Lake community through strategic infrastructure development. Since 2019, we have been actively addressing the critical needs for housing and recreational spaces, ensuring a vibrant, sustainable environment for current and future generations.
Housing Initiatives:
- 2019: Recognizing the vital need for housing, the Nikihk Housing Society initiated efforts to address this crucial issue, given that no new housing had been built in Kelly Lake for 45 years.
- 2020: Development of the Kelly Lake Community Housing Plan, which identified affordable housing needs, overcrowding, and population growth. This plan was pivotal in securing funding from BC Housing.
- 2021 - Present: Ongoing engagement with BC Housing and the BC Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) to refine strategies and prepare for construction.
- 2024: Site preparation and well drilling commenced, with water testing and finalization of housing designs.
- 2025: Anticipated start of construction for twelve two-bedroom accessible housing units designed to prioritize elder needs, with the flexibility to accommodate families and caregivers.
Recreational Development:
- 2023-2024: In partnership with industry leaders, Nikihk developed new community recreation spaces, including a baseball diamond and a horseshoe pitch, enhancing community engagement and wellness.
