Voter Registration

The Kelly Lake community  has been working towards creating a government for the past year, and the time has come to prepare for our vote. We need your voice! All eligible community members must register to vote by March 9, 2025, if you wish to have access to online voting.

Eligibility: Over 16 years old, Indigenous, and connected by family to the traditional territory around Kelly Lake and have connection to Kelly Lake’s traditional territory through historic trapping and living on the land (cultural connection). Or:

• People that have been married into families from Kelly Lake for 5+ years.
• People with demonstrated, long-term (10+ years), participation in the community, support for the community (connection and contribution).

How to Register:

• Through the voter application form, available online, by email, or in paper copy
• Registration stations are open on February 9^th in Kelly Lake
• Submit your application to [email protected] or give it to a member of the Governance Committee

March 9th 2025 - Community Meeting

• Community meeting on March 9 to mark the end of voter registration
• Community distribution of nomination packages
• Nomination process communication begins
• Final review session, with Elder presence, on March 9 following the community meeting

March 10th 2025 - Governance Committee Meeting

• Governance Committee consolidates voter list and sends communications out to every eligible voter:
  • Confirmation of enrollment on the voter’s list
  • Election Process
  • Nomination Package

Nomination Period

Nominations open for the Kelly Lake Government election March 9th 2025! We are looking for five leaders who align with our traditional values and are committed to guiding our community forward.

• Nomination Dates: March 9 – March 23
• How to Nominate:
  • Submit your nomination in person or by email to Dacia Douhaibi.

Include a short candidate statement affirming leadership qualities and community commitment.

March 9th – March 23rd 2025

• Nomination period
• Electoral Officers communicate with nominees to ensure nomination packages are complete
• Nominations accepted by email to Dacia at [email protected]
• Online voting platform populated with the voter’s list data

March 24th/25th 2025

• Governance Committee meeting to confirm candidates for the ballot
• Candidate list prepared and uploaded to the voting platform.
• Communications distributed across all platforms to share information for online voting and polls

Voting Period

April 3rd 2025

• Voting link sent out to the voter’s list via email. Reminders sent out across communication platforms that online voting is open from April 4 – April 11.

Online Voting Opens April 4th 2025

Online voting for the Kelly Lake Interim Government election opens! Cast your vote from anywhere to help shape the future of our community.

• Online Voting Dates: April 4^th – 11^th 2025
• How to Vote Online:
  1. Registered voters that provided a valid email address will receive a PIN by email that allows them to vote online.
  2. Click on the link provided and your voter credentials will populate in the Intelivote system.
  3. If you need assistance, there is a contact form on the Nikihk website that will connect you with an Electoral Officer.

April 10th 2025

• Reminder email sent out to voter’s list indicating that people have 24 hours left to vote online.

April 11th 2025

• Notification that online voting closes at 6pm Alberta time (5pm PST), and in-person polls will be in Kelly Lake on April 12 and 13

In-Person Polling Days - April 12th and 13th 2025

The in-person polling station is open for two days: April 12 and April 13

• Location: Kelly Lake Community Centre
• Time: Saturday April 12: 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Sunday April 13: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Can’t make it in person? Online voting remains open until April 11^th at 6:00 pm Alberta time (5pm PST).

April 12th 2025

• In person voting from 2pm to 6pm
• Frequent updates via social media related to voting opportunities today and tomorrow, reminder of times polling station is open

April 13th 2025

• Morning: Reminder this is the last opportunity to vote
• In person voting from 10am to 2pm
• Afternoon: Vote count and Results announced (counting will be livestreamed)

Livestream April 13th 2025

We will be livestreaming from the Kelly Lake Community Centre all day from 10am until the vote count is completed at the end of the day. Tune in to our Facebook page - Nikihk Management & Community Development Society to follow along and take part in this historic day.
