At this community meeting we explored examples of declarations and other constituting documents that a number of First Nations have issued over the past century. These documents set out statements of rights and intents as well as forming a basis for sovereignty and unique governance systems. After a presentation of the various examples, attendees had the opportunity to sit in small groups to discuss these in the context of what would work for Kelly Lake given its history, traditions and hopes for the future. As there is much to learn and consider, community members will take the next few weeks to review and consider what was presented. We will return to this discussion at our community meeting in Kelly Lake on June 9th. We encourage all those connected to Kelly Lake to review the documents presented, research other sources and come to the next community meeting ready to join a lively and incredibly important discussion about the future of our community.
